Network Planning Group Reviews Key Metro Projects Under PM GatiShakti National Master Plan

New Delhi: The 110th meeting of the Network Planning Group (NPG) was convened at the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) to evaluate critical infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing multimodal connectivity and logistics efficiency.

Aligned with the objectives of the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan (PMGS NMP), the NPG assessed a total of six projects, including two rail, two metro, and two road/highway projects. These were examined for their adherence to integrated planning, last-mile connectivity, and a ‘whole-of-government’ approach.

The evaluated initiatives are expected to improve logistics efficiency, reduce travel time, and generate significant socio-economic benefits across their respective regions.

Metro Projects Reviewed by NPG

Mumbai Metro Line 11: Strengthening Urban Mobility in South Mumbai

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has proposed the development of Mumbai Metro Line–11, a 17.41 km fully underground corridor connecting Anik Depot to Gateway of India.

This corridor will integrate seamlessly with existing and upcoming metro lines, contributing to the larger ~337 km metro network across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

The alignment will serve key residential, commercial, and heritage zones, including:

  • Wadala
  • Byculla
  • Nagpada
  • Crawford Market
  • CSMT
  • Horniman Circle
  • Gateway of India

The project is expected to:

  • Reduce road congestion
  • Lower travel time and vehicle operating costs
  • Decrease fuel consumption and emissions
  • Improve road safety

Overall, Metro Line–11 is set to significantly enhance Mumbai’s urban transport ecosystem while supporting sustainable and environmentally responsible mobility.

Pune Metro Line 4 Extensions: Expanding Connectivity in Growth Corridors

MoHUA has also proposed extensions to Pune Metro Line–4 through Line–4B and Line–4C, spanning a combined 16.67 km.

These corridors will strengthen connectivity in eastern and south-eastern Pune, linking key areas such as:

  • Hadapsar
  • Manjari
  • Lonikalbhor
  • Phursungi
  • Bhekrai Nagar
  • Wadki

Line–4B will run along the Pune–Solapur Highway, while Line–4C will extend along Saswad Road, with integration at Hadapsar.

The project will:

  • Improve connectivity with major bus depots
  • Link with the Pune–Daund railway corridor
  • Reduce congestion and travel time
  • Lower vehicular emissions

These extensions are expected to support Pune’s rapid urban expansion by providing efficient, reliable, and sustainable public transport options.

Driving Integrated Infrastructure Growth

The evaluations carried out by the Network Planning Group reaffirm the government’s commitment to coordinated infrastructure development under the PM GatiShakti framework.

By focusing on multimodal integration and last-mile connectivity, these projects aim to transform urban mobility, improve logistics performance, and drive long-term economic growth across regions.
