The Bengaluru Metro project has reached another milestone with the arrival of the eighth trainset for the Yellow Line at the Hebbagodi Depot on January 19, 2026. All six coaches of the trainset have been delivered, marking steady progress in rolling stock deployment for the corridor.
The trainset has been manufactured by Titagarh Rail Systems, reflecting continued momentum in meeting the operational requirements of the Yellow Line.
Testing and Commissioning Process
According to a senior official from Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), the newly delivered coaches will first be assembled into a complete trainset. This will be followed by a series of mandatory static and dynamic tests, including:
-
Signalling system integration
-
Performance and safety checks
-
Trial runs over a stipulated minimum distance
These tests will be conducted during night hours, after the conclusion of regular passenger services, to ensure safety and minimise operational disruption.
Yellow Line Corridor Details
The Yellow Line spans 19.15 km, connecting R.V. Road to Bommasandra, and comprises 16 stations. Once operational, the corridor is expected to significantly enhance connectivity between central Bengaluru and the Bommasandra industrial corridor, benefiting daily commuters and industrial workers alike.
Rolling Stock Supply Arrangement
Under an existing memorandum of understanding (MoU) between CRRC Corporation Limited (China) and Titagarh Rail Systems, Titagarh is responsible for supplying:
-
14 trainsets for the Yellow Line
-
20 trainsets for the Purple Line
Originally, in February 2019, CRRC Corporation had won the rolling stock contract for Bengaluru Metro, which involved supplying 216 coaches across 36 trainsets for the Yellow and Purple lines. However, due to challenges in fulfilling the contract, CRRC entered into a partnership with Titagarh Rail Systems.
As per the revised arrangement:
-
CRRC will supply one prototype trainset each for the Yellow and Purple lines
-
The remaining 34 trainsets will be manufactured by Titagarh Rail Systems in India
Boost to Domestic Manufacturing
The collaboration reflects a broader shift towards domestic manufacturing of metro rolling stock and supports India’s push for localisation in urban transport infrastructure.
The arrival of the eighth trainset highlights steady progress on the Yellow Line, bringing the corridor closer to operational readiness and strengthening Bengaluru Metro’s role in easing congestion and improving urban mobility.
