Daily traffic congestion on Nagar Road has long been a pain point for Pune’s commuters. The busy arterial stretch connects major residential pockets, commercial zones, IT hubs, and key gateways such as Viman Nagar and Kharadi, leading to frequent bottlenecks during peak hours.
To address this chronic issue, Pune Metro has begun work on a 4.7-km double-decker elevated corridor that will combine a six-lane flyover with a Metro line running above it. Officials say the project is designed to ease surface-level congestion while simultaneously strengthening the city’s public transport network.
Construction Begins from Ramwadi
Confirming the start of work, Pune Metro Executive Director Atul Gadgil said construction has commenced from the Ramwadi end of Nagar Road.
“We have started the process of developing the flyover-cum-Metro rail route on the Nagar Road stretch. It is a very big work as the Metro stations would be constructed above the flyovers on the route,” Gadgil told The Indian Express.
This will be Pune’s third double-decker Metro project, after similar corridors on Karve Road and Ganeshkhind Road, parts of which are already operational while others remain under construction.
What the Nagar Road Double-Decker Project Includes
The elevated corridor will stretch 4.7 km from Ramwadi to Tuljabhavani Nagar. It will also integrate with the planned Kharadi Bypass station and include a spur line towards Pune Airport at Viman Nagar, improving last-mile connectivity to one of the city’s busiest travel hubs.
Key design features include:
-
First level: A six-lane elevated flyover
-
Second level: Pune Metro tracks and stations
-
Minimum vertical clearance: 5.5 metres between road and Metro level
-
Future-ready design: Flyover can be expanded from six to eight lanes if traffic volumes increase
Four Metro stations will be constructed along this stretch:
-
Vimannagar
-
Somnathnagar
-
Kharadi Bypass
-
Tuljabhavani
Engineers will construct platforms, concourse girders, and deck slabs while ensuring minimal disruption to existing roads, railways, utilities, and nearby structures.
“Where work is required to be carried out at locations adjacent to roads, railways, utilities, structures, and monuments, suitable safety and protection arrangements will be ensured,” Gadgil added.
How the Project Fits into Pune Metro’s Expansion Plans
The Nagar Road corridor is part of Pune Metro’s broader expansion strategy. In June last year, the Centre approved extensions of the Vanaz–Ramwadi line towards Chandni Chowk and Wagholi. However, the current phase focuses only on the Ramwadi–Tuljabhavani Nagar section.
At present, Pune Metro operates two main corridors:
-
Vanaz–Ramwadi
-
Pimpri Chinchwad–Swargate
Work is already underway to extend the Pimpri Chinchwad–Swargate line further to Bhakti Shakti and Katraj, which will significantly benefit IT parks, educational institutions, business districts, and residential neighbourhoods.
Additionally, the Vanaz line is being extended 1.1 km towards Chandni Chowk, with two new stations—Kothrud Depot and Chandni Chowk—and a small flyover planned at the first level along this route.
Will It Ease Nagar Road Traffic?
By separating local traffic, through-traffic, and mass transit into different vertical levels, the double-decker design is expected to reduce choke points on Nagar Road. While construction may cause short-term inconvenience, officials believe the completed corridor will deliver long-term relief and faster, more reliable travel across eastern Pune.
