New Delhi: The Government of Delhi has earmarked ₹8,374 crore for the transport sector in its FY2026–27 budget, with a strong emphasis on clean mobility, metro expansion, and regional connectivity.
Presenting the budget, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta outlined the government’s vision of transforming the capital into a “green, sustainable and congestion-free transport system.”
Major Push for Electric Mobility
In a bid to tackle rising pollution levels, the government has allocated ₹200 crore for the rollout of the Delhi Electric Vehicle Policy 2.0.
The initiative will focus on:
- Expanding EV bus fleets
- Strengthening charging infrastructure
- Integrating vehicle purchase and scrapping incentives
According to the Chief Minister, these measures aim to accelerate Delhi’s transition towards a zero-emission mobility ecosystem.
Significant Investment in Metro Expansion
A major portion of the budget—₹2,885 crore—has been allocated for the expansion of metro rail networks under Phase IV and Phase V projects of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation.
The expansion is expected to:
- Improve last-mile connectivity
- Reduce traffic congestion
- Provide faster and more efficient urban transit
Boost to Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS)
The government has also allocated ₹568 crore for the development of Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridors.
Additionally, two new NaMo Bharat corridors have been approved:
- Delhi–SNB (Shahjahanpur–Neemrana–Behror)
- Delhi–Panipat–Sonipat
These high-speed rail corridors are expected to:
- Improve connectivity across the National Capital Region (NCR)
- Reduce travel time by up to 60%
- Ease congestion and lower vehicular emissions
The Delhi–Gurugram–SNB corridor, in particular, will connect Delhi with key regions in Haryana and Rajasthan, strengthening inter-state mobility.
Focus on Decongestion and Future Planning
To further ease traffic congestion, the government has allocated ₹10 crore for conducting feasibility studies on new transport solutions and infrastructure projects.
Conclusion
With a balanced focus on electric mobility, metro expansion, and high-speed regional connectivity, Delhi’s FY27 transport budget signals a strategic shift towards sustainable urban mobility. The initiatives are expected to play a crucial role in reducing pollution, cutting travel time, and improving the overall quality of life for residents.
