ABB Wins Propulsion Systems Order for Mumbai Metro Lines 5 and 6

ABB has secured a significant contract from Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd to supply advanced propulsion systems and Train Control and Management System (TCMS) software for Mumbai Metro Line 5 (Orange Line) and Line 6 (Pink Line).

The two corridors are key components of Mumbai’s rapidly expanding metro network and are expected to substantially improve east–west and north–south connectivity, reduce travel times, and ease road congestion for millions of daily commuters.

Scope of Supply

Under the contract, ABB will supply integrated traction and control systems for a total of 40 six-car metro trainsets, comprising:

  • 18 six-car trainsets for Line 6, connecting Swami Samarth Nagar to Vikhroli

  • 22 six-car trainsets for Line 5, linking Thane to Kalyan via Bhiwandi

The scope includes:

  • Traction converters

  • Auxiliary converters

  • Traction motors

  • TCMS software

Together, these systems form a fully integrated traction and control package designed to deliver high reliability, improved energy efficiency, and optimised lifecycle performance.

Manufacturing and Localisation

Manufacturing will be carried out across ABB’s Indian facilities, reinforcing the company’s localisation strategy:

  • Traction converters will be manufactured at ABB’s Bengaluru facility

  • Traction motors will be produced at its Vadodara plant

The project will be supported by local engineering, testing, and service teams, underlining ABB’s commitment to domestic value creation and long-term support.

Entry into 25 kV AC Metro Segment

Commenting on the order, Roger Buchmann, Global Business Line Head – Rail Systems at ABB, said the project marks ABB’s entry into India’s 25 kV AC metro segment, representing a significant expansion of its technology footprint in the country.

He noted that energy-efficient propulsion technologies combined with intelligent control systems can help enable low-emission, reliable urban transport while reducing overall lifecycle energy consumption.

Strengthening ABB–Titagarh Partnership

The order is another milestone in the strategic partnership between ABB and Titagarh Rail Systems, established in 2023 to collaborate on metro rail projects in India. The partnership focuses on:

  • Technology transfer

  • Localisation of manufacturing

  • Long-term collaboration on upcoming metro projects

As part of the agreement, the partners will also explore collaborative manufacturing and partial co-production of traction motors, traction converters, and auxiliary converters for 25 kV AC metro systems within India.

Supporting Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat

The project supports the development of a resilient domestic metro rolling stock ecosystem and aligns with the Government of India’s Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives. By strengthening local manufacturing capabilities and rail supply chains, the order contributes to the sustainable growth of India’s urban mobility infrastructure.

With decades of global experience in rail and traction technologies, ABB continues to support metro and mainline rail operators worldwide, combining global expertise with strong local execution to deliver efficient, reliable, and sustainable mass transit solutions.
